This page is designed to help you find the regulated box mod that best suites your needs and vaping style.
On this page:
Vaping batteries have come a long way since I started vaping. When I first started vaping, all that was available was cigalike style batteries that delivered approximately 3.2-3.5 volts.
I remember my first variable voltage ego style e-cig and how thrilled I was with that to actually be able increase the power to my atomizer all the way up to 4.8 volts.
The first box mod I owned went all the way up to a remarkable 11 Watts!
For the longest time the only way to further increase power to your atomizers was to go with mechanical mods and wrap your own low resistance coils.
Hard to believe, that was only about 6 or 7 years ago. I’m continually amazed and enthused about how quickly and how far vaping technology has advanced.
Regulated battery and box mods have been a huge game changer on the vaping scene. New devices offer an ever increasing list of safety features keeping vapers vaping safely even with ultra-low resistance coils and super-high wattage outputs.
Although some vapers continue to use and enjoy mechanical mods, most of us have jumped on the bandwagon of regulated devices which offer so much more control and stress-free vaping.
I will be reviewing some of the better mechanical mods in a later article, but for now, here are the best regulated battery and box mods currently available for 2018.
Wismec Reuleaux RX Gen 3 300 Watt TC Vape Mod
The Reuleaux RX 300 is the newest incarnation of the popular RX Series by Wismec and JayBo.
Like the original RX 200, the Gen 3 version uses triple 18650 batteries, in the same “Reuleaux” fashion.
It really feels much like holding three batteries in your hand, just bunched together.
It’s quite a bit smaller than the original though at just 40 by 50 millimeters and it’s only 114 millimeters tall.
It’s much more comfortable and ergonomic in the hand than the original too with a softer, spongier finish.
The Reuleaux Gen 3 is fully functional in temperature control mode with nickel, titanium and stainless steel.
It features low resistance protection and will only fire coils at or above 0.05 ohms in temperature control mode and 0.1 ohms in wattage mode.
The RX 300 features a nice 1.3 inch OLED screen which shows quite a bit of information and is programmable to suit your vaping style.
Depending on how your are vaping, it’ll show the set temperature or wattage, the resistance of your coil, and a choice between amps, puff counter or puff timer.
The Gen 3 now shows the remaining charge of each of the three batteries separately.
I like it much better than the RX 200 which showed remaining battery life of all three in one very small icon.
I also really like the way the battery door on the Gen 3 is hinged at the bottom. It just feels more secure to me than the magnetic battery door of the RX 200.
I really enjoyed the RX 200 which I upgraded to 220 watts after a few months, but the Gen 3 is a very nice improvement both in feel as well as in performance.
I rarely build coils low enough to be able to use the full 300 watts, but there is the odd occasion when I do, especially with the fused claptons I’ve been developing a taste for recently. It’s definitely nice to know the power is there when you need it!
Like the original, the Gen 3 is fully firmware upgradable using the micro USB connection just under the screen.
Although it is recommended to use a separate charger for your batteries, you can also use the USB connection to charge the cells in the device.
I have tested it out and I’ve had no issues with the on-board charger. It does a great job charging and will stop as soon as each cell is charged to 4.2 volts.
All in all, another fantastic mod from Wismec and JayBo. The Gen 3 certainly offers more than enough power and function to please even the most avid vaper while being easy enough to use for the absolute beginner. Take a closer look for yourself!
AugVape V200 Mod Review
The V200 by AugVape was made with the car enthusiast in mind.
It was designed to look similar to the VTEC engine by Honda (shown below).
Although it’s quite eye catching aesthetically, it’s also a very solid, powerful mod with lots of cool features.
As the name suggests, the V200 is capable of delivering 200 watts of power to your coils using 2 18650 batteries.
It’s quite a comfortable fit in the hand, even though it looks kinda boxy. It’s relatively small, measuring just 29 by 45 mm and only 88 mm tall.
Wattage is adjustable in 1 degree increments using the pretty authentic looking “oil cap” dial.
The firing button is pretty cool too and is hidden from view, under the OLED screen. Simply press the top portion of the screen to activate your atomizer.
The are three vaping modes available on the V200, VW (variable wattage), Bypass Mode, and a new “V-Mode”.
In V-Mode, the ramp up time is greatly reduced.
AugVape assures us that in V-Mode, it’ll ramp up faster than any other 200 watt device on the market.
Based on my own personal experience with the mod, I’d say that’s pretty accurate.
The body of the device is made almost entirely of a heavy-duty zinc-alloy making pretty indestructible. Choose either the classic red like the engine or the black or white version (shown below).
The V200 will accommodate atomizers with resistances from 0.05 ohms to 3 ohms using the most common 510 thread connection.
The display is quite informative, showing wattage selected, atomizer resistance, voltage, puff timer and charge percentage of each of the two batteries.
I was a little surprised when I first saw that, as most of the new mods coming out do offer full temperature control with 3 metals.
I have noticed recently though, a lot of vapers, including myself, going back to straight wattage mode.
Not sure if it’s a growing trend away from temperature control, but if that’s something that’s important to you, definitely choose one of the other mods on this page.
Overall, I’d say the V200 is a powerful, great looking mod that really shines in “V-Mode” with more exotic coils like fused claptons, aliens, etc. The reduced ramp up time makes even using Kanthal cores a more viable option.
It’s definitely an eye catcher with more than enough power while being virtually indestructible too. An all around pleasure to use. Check it out for yourself!
SMOK Alien 220 Watt TC Box Mod
It performs equally well with each in both wattage and temperature control modes.
Due to it’s ergonomically designed function, it’s quite a comfortable mod to use all day long in a variety of situations.
The thing I’m enjoying most about it (aside from the actual function of the device) is the way the firing button is designed as almost the whole of one side of the unit (shown below).
It’s just a great mod to use when you are busy driving or working and just need to reach for something, without taking your eyes off what you’re doing, for a quick puff in a hurry.
The way it’s been designed, you can just pick it up and squeeze anywhere along the side and activate your coil. Not that the other mods’ firing buttons are so hard to find but this one is the best I’ve used yet as far as comfort in the hand while vaping.
The Alien 220, as the name suggests, is capable of delivering up to 220 watts of power as well as being fully functional in temperature control mode with Nickle, Titanium or Stainless Steel.
It’s a nice size in the hand at 84 mm in height, 44 mm wide and just 30 mm thick.
It uses the most common 510 thread connection so it compatible with virtually any tank on the market.
The resistance range in variable wattage mode is from 0.1-3 ohms and in temperature control it’s from 0.06-3 ohms.
The Alien 220 uses 2 18650 batteries which aren’t included but if you don’t yet have a charger, you can use the on-board charger to charge your batteries using the micro USB charger which they do include.
The screen is quite a nice size, it’s bright and easy to read and quite informative.
On top of the usual wattage, voltage and resistance display, it also shows the current being used in amps as well as a puff counter.
Overall, it’s a great mod suitable regardless of where you are on this vaping journey.
If you are still a newer vaper, it will work very nicely with above-ohm tanks like the Aspire Nautilus and give you room to grow.
You might even enjoy the full starter kit which includes tank, batteries, charger, e-liquid, etc.
If you’ve been vaping a while and are into building your own coils, it’s fantastic too. It helps take some of the risk out of the way not only with the display details, but also the safety mechanisms included like atomizer short protection, low atomizer lock-out, etc.
YIHI SX Mini G Class 200W TC Box Mod Review
Although a bit pricier than most mods on this page, the new SX Mini G Class features the YIHI SX 550J chip, which is one of the most advanced chip sets currently on the market.
The SX Mini G Class is a dual 18650 box mod with some ultra advanced features.
It even includes anti-dry burning technology which really helps in avoiding dry hits, especially for drippers and RTAs.
I love the look and feel of this mod and the easy to navigate user interface using a single joystick style button.
The mod is stunning to look at and features a Bluetooth app as well as a totally customizable screen.
It even includes a wide selection of wallpapers for the background image on the screen.
As the name suggests, the mod is capable of delivering up to 200 Watts to your atomizer. It can deliver as much as 50 Amps safely and go as high as 9.5 Volts.
There is also an available bypass mode which allows it to function similarly to a mechanical mod.
In temperature control mode, it is compatible with Stainless Steel, Nickle, and Titanium.
The device can fire coils as low as 0.15 ohms and as high as a full 3 ohms.
It’s quite a hard hitting mod too and allows for use in Watts, Temperature Control and even Joules.
I’m very impressed with this device and I love the feel of it in my hand.
It’s not only cutting edge technologically, but it’s also very ergonomic and a pleasure to vape on.
The SX Mini G Class uses the most common 510 threading and will accommodate tanks or RDAs as wide as 30 mm in diameter.
I really like the way the tank or RDA sits in the center of the top portion as opposed to off on one side like most other box mods.
The SX G Class features a 2 Amp on board charger that is as fine tuned as the rest of the device thanks to the YIHI 550J chip set.
It charges super fast and will stop charging your batteries once they have reached 4.2 Volts.
All in all it’s one of my favorite mods to use and carry around with me and even features a built in clock and date display which comes in handy when I don’t have my phone with me.
I even like the way the logo on the back lights up while in use. The only downside to that is that there is no stealth-mode on this device.
I have the carbon fiber black which is my personal favorite but I also really like the black and gold option which is quite stunning as well.
If you are someone who is ultra-keen on aesthetics and having the most advanced device currently available, this is definitely a mod worth taking a closer look at. Take a closer look for yourself here!
iPower 80W TC by Eleaf
The iStick 50 Watt was my favorite battery mod for quite a while before I started getting more into temperature control.
Although the iStick series has continued with 100 watt and recently even 200 watt versions, I wanted to highlight the iPower on this page because it’s a fantastic option for anyone just starting to get more into vaping mods.
The iPower is a very comfortable box mod in the hand, just slightly larger in size than the iStick 50 watt. It’s 83.5 mm in height, 49.5 mm in width and only 23.5 mm thick.
Although I do find aesthetics important, the main reason why I think it’s a great option is the fact that the iPower houses an internal 5000 mAh battery, so it’s ready to go right out of the box, no external batteries or chargers to worry about right away.
For myself, the 5000 mAh battery last me about 2 full days of vaping, but I don’t vape as heavy as I used to. Most heavy vapers should be able to get at least a day on a full charge.
In temperature control mode, it is compatible with Nickle, Titanium and Stainless Steel.
The iPower will fire coils as low as 0.05 ohms in temperature control mode, as low as 0.1 ohm in regular wattage mode (for sub-ohm direct to lung vapers) and will fire as high as 3.5 ohms in wattage mode for mouth to lung vapers (and any resistance in between).
Although it only offers 80 watts which may seem small in comparison to some of the newer models being released lately, as long as you aren’t using ridiculously low resistance builds, it will be more than enough power.
If you are a “super sub-ohmer” though, who uses/builds coils at around 0.1 ohms or lower, you might be better off with a more powerful device.
The iPower is an easy mod to use, feels great in the hand and uses the most common 510 threading for the tank connection, so it will be compatible with most of the tanks/atomizers on the market.
The iPower is available in several different colors and is a great choice for those of us who prefer internal battery options.
The box includes the charging cable and the users manual, but it really is pretty intuitive to use. Take a closer look for yourself here.
VaporFi VOX TC Box Mod
The new VOX 50 Watt TC Box Mod is one of the newest and most welcome additions by one of the most well known and longest standing e-cig manufacturers in the US.
VaporFi has added to an already impressive collection of ego style and modded type vaping devices with one of their newest high powered box mods that now also features temperature control!
The VOX TC is fantastic not just in terms of performance, but also in the countless security and protection features built in to it. It offers a nice range of wattages, from 5 to 50 watts and the voltage output is equally impressive delivering between 1 to 7.5 volts.
The new Vox TC will also allow for a full range of temperature control (max temperature of the coil) from 200-600 degrees fahrenheit.
Temperature control is still relatively new but it really helps, particularly in RTAs, in preventing dry or burned hits. Vaping in temperature control mode is much more regulated and you end up using a lot less e-liquid.
For those of you like myself who feel like they are practically drinking it sometimes, temperature control is a big money saver in juice. Vaping strictly in temperature control mode cuts my e-liquid cost almost in half.
Another really nice thing about the VOX TC is that it will actually find the ideal voltage output depending on your coil resistance and your desired wattage output making it an ideal choice for rebuildables (RBAs, RTAs). It works like a dream with my sub ohm coils, and will read resistances as low as 0.05 ohms, or as high as a full 2.5 ohms in standard Kanthal or Nickel wire.
I love the feel and look of this mod, not only is it really nice to look at, it fits comfortably in my hand but has enough weight to it to feel substantial. It’s an awesome little mod with many of the same safety features as the original VOX 50 and some nice upgrades too.
I have both the 50 watt and the 100 watt TC box mods from VaporFi and I have to say as far as how it feels in my hand, I actually prefer this one. It just fits better and feels more ergonomic to me.
It has the usual reverse battery protection, short-circuit protection, auto ohms meter, short circuit protection and features one of the most advanced chips in the industry which always finds the ideal voltage for your coil and selected output.
It has an easy to read 3 digit OLED display, pass through charging and a well vented battery case.
The VOX TC uses the most common 510 threading so you can use it with most tanks on the market.
The positive pin is fully adjustable and spring loaded allowing for just about any tank, dripper or clone to make a solid connection.
More importantly than anything else to me is how well it works and how long it lasts between charges.
The Vox TC has performed equally well for me in both wattage and TC modes. In wattage mode there is more than enough power to provide huge clouds and great tasting vapor with pretty much anything I use it with.
In temperature control mode I have all the same power but can also tailor the vapor to the exact temperature I like it which is great and allows for differing moods, flavors and days. An all around great vape every time.
Of course, if you are using the Vox TC in temperature control mode, make sure you are using a nickel wire in your atomizer and ensure that you never use a nickel atomizer in straight wattage mode!
Personally, I’m really starting to love TC vaping. I find like my vapor around 380-420 fahrenheit which is a little cooler than I usually get with Kanthal in wattage mode and it’s nice because it’s a little easier on my throat. It’s just a little bit more pleasurable and somehow the hits just seem so much more saturated in TC mode.
For safety, as I always do with all my TC mods, I did a dry cotton test before I used it and it passed no problem. I went as high as 410 and the cotton remained completely white when I was done. No burning or discoloration at all.
The power is more than adequate for even the most enthusiastic “cloud chasers”. For myself, I am usually fine with 25-30 watts and even on my hardest days I never had much need to go over 40 even with a 1 ohm atomizer but, I’ll admit, it is always nice knowing it’s there if I do need it.
With the high capacity IMR 18650 battery included, it’s usually lasting me between 1 and 2 full days on a single charge and I still vape the equivalent of about a pack of traditional cigarettes per day. There is an onboard charger for it as well in case you don’t have a separate charger and they do include the cable for it too.
It is a little on the pricey side compared to some of the others on this page, but the durability, temperature control and extra safety features including overheat protection make it absolutely worthwhile.
If you are someone who is looking for more out of your vape and are looking to do it in style and peace of mind, take a closer look. Particularly for those who love to build and like to have the ability to control the maximum coil temperature, the VOX TC is a solid choice.
There is no question about the fact that it was made for the enthusiast and based on durability, style, safety and performance, for those who are serious about vaping, it certainly is a winner.
This page, as most others on this site is a continual work in progress as newer, better, more advanced mods are being introduced daily.
Some new introductions are repackages of older versions while others are truly groundbreaking. It is my aim to provide reviews only for those mods that are a cut above the rest.
With thousands of mods currently available, choice can be confusing, especially for newer vapers.
If you are looking for a solid, reliable mod that will have you vaping worry free, check out one of the regulated mods listed on this page as they have all been thoroughly vetted by me.
If you have a suggestion for “best regulated box mod” that isn’t listed on this page, by all means, let us know in the comment section below!
